• Finding Your Purpose; Owning Your Gifts

I’d often thought, why couldn’t I have been satisfied with being a third-grade teacher? Why did I have to go upsetting the apple cart and venture down this road of entrepreneurship as a coach and healer? Life would have been a lot easier had I just stayed in Pennsylvania.

    But would it?

When I was an elementary school teacher, I recall times after the students had left for the day, where I’d sit in the quiet of my classroom and ask, “Is this it?”  Not that there was anything wrong with teaching. In fact, I loved it for a while. But it always felt like something was missing, though I tried convincing myself it was just in my head.

As Carolyn Myss says, “People suffer when they pursue a life or chase a dream that doesn’t belong to them.” But how often I had envied someone else’s talent and wondered why it couldn’t that have been me? Or traveled down a road that led others to success only to find myself unenthused or depressed?

The reason is because I was chasing a gift that wasn’t mine. The gifts we are given by the Universe, by God, by the Creative Source are the gifts that would best serve the world through us. They may not be the ones the world deems as most valuable (just ask any nonmainstream healer), but they are the ones where we feel most ourselves while giving them.

You’ll know your gift because you’ll constantly be put in situations where you have to use it, whether you feel like it or not. It could be your creativity, your compassion, your sound advice, your workmanship, or your abilities with numbers. Whatever it is, you’ll find when you’re not using your gift, you feel cut off from life. And when you are, you feel more energized.

But we cannot compare our gifts to others, making someone else more valuable than us, just as we cannot compare our right hand to our left hand as being more useful. Both are from the same body – just like you and I are from the same body. And ALL are needed in order for full expression of the divine to enter this world.

Once we accept our strengths as how God chose to express love in this world, we can now become curious about how these gifts will be used, rather than condemn ourselves for not being what we think we should be.

A Course in Love tells us, “It will be in your unique expression of Union that your Self will come to wholeness and be fully who you are and able to express love fully.”

You and the Universe are Co-creators in this world. Allow Its gifts to pour through you so others may receive the love they need. In other words, it’s not about you, but it is what fulfills you.
